20th Anniversary Trip to Washington - March 2024

For our 20th anniversary, Will and I went back to Seattle to recreate the fun we had on our honeymoon. We booked the same condo at Discovery Bay and everything.

Sun, March 10 - Travel Day

Will spoiled us by getting us first class tickets and access to the Delta Sky lounge. So we were pretty spoiled on our flight.

After we got our luggage and rental car, we drove to the condo with a quick stop at a grocery store for some supplies.

We are pretty sure we stayed in the same building, if not the same condo last time. This time we were in #6. We spent some time exploring the condo complex and reminiscing. Will made us a delicious Salmon dinner and we spent the rest of the day relaxing.

Mon, March 11 - Port Townsend Day

We slept in and decided we wanted to go explore Port Townsend.

Will was sweet and made sure we stopped at a few quilt/fabric stores. We walked down the main road where all the touristy thing were. It was a cold and blustery day, and turns out, its the off season! So most of the shops were closed or only open on the weekends. So we did some wandering. There was a quilt shop with an address in the same building as the post office. So we wandered over there and looked all through this old, cool looking building till it dawned on us that it was probably a PO Box. I felt kind of silly and we laughed about it.

After that we went to Dock’s Marina Grill for a super delicious dinner. We were killing time till a movie started in town so we were slow eaters but the wait staff was amazing. The food was delicious!

We still had some time to kill so drove around. There is a little park not too far away where we walked around, saw the water, and took some pictures.

It was finally time to go to the theater. When we got there we found out they weren’t actually showing a movie that day! We laughed some more and headed back to the condo. We watched Seven Samurai at the condo instead.

Tuesday, March 12th - Relax Day

The weather was supposed to be really windy still, so we opted for a relaxing day. We slept in again, watched TV and relaxed.

At lunch time we went to Fat Smitty’s which is the closest establishment to the condo. It is such a fun little burger joint. The food was super delicious. There were dollar bills pinned everywhere. So we added to the decor.

Later that night, we tried a movie theater in Port Angelos and was able to see Dune 2. A very relaxing day.

Wednesday, March 13th - Downtown Seattle Day

Happy Anniversary to us! We relived some of our experiences on our honeymoon but hopping on the Bainbridge Ferry and went to downtown.

We walked up to Space Needle. We saw the gum wall on the way.

We wanted to go to the MoPop (Formally known as the Experience Music Museum). Last time we went in the gift shop and decided the tour was too much. Turns out they are closed Wednesdays! So we went to the Space Needle. Last time we walked through the gift shop and decided tickets were too much. We did the exact same thing this time.

So we changed it up and decided to do the Underground Tour. This is something that has been on our list to do for a while. It was such a fun thing! Lisa, our tour guide, was very entertaining. It was cool to see all the things she showed us. The walls and streets that were underground, why they got covered up, and some of the things going on at the time. One fun part was when she said the prostitutes in town would put their profession as Seamstress on the census records. So she made a bunch of sewing jokes. It was great.

After the tour we ate at the Crab Pot. This was a highlight from our honeymoon so this was a must on this trip. The food was delicious and it was so nostalgic.

Then we jumped back on the ferry and back to the condo.

Thursday, March 14th - Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend (and PI Day)

We didn’t know much about this place except that there was a lighthouse there and some walking trails.

It was quite a surprise to get there and see all the sights. It was an operating fort then it was turned into a state park/camp ground/event center.  We first walked along the beach.

It was a very tide and pretty windy. We got to the lighthouse and walked all around it. There is a program where you can sign up to stay at the lighthouse keepers house for really cheap as long as you do maintenance, mow the grass, etc.

Then we walked through the campground and back to the car.

Then we drove for a couple minutes and went on the walking trails to the batteries. These big cement structures were open and we climbed all over them. The used to hold 10 and 12 inch guns as a defensive structure for the Coast Guard in the Strait of Jaun de Fuca. It reminded us of being in France with the Robert’s to see WWII stuff. We learned lots of cool stuff and saw some really pretty views.

After that we went back to the condo. We had pizza to celebrate Pi Day and played DND virtually with some friends.

Friday, March 15th - Olympic National Forest

We really wanted to see the National Forest and do some hiking. Our first stop was the visitors center in Port Angeles. The guide there gave us a map and gave us a couple suggestions for some good hikes.

The first hike was really just a walk. About .25 miles round trip to see Madison Falls. So beautiful! We don’t get a lot of waterfalls like that in Utah.

The second hike was Marymere Falls. It starts at Crescent Lake and is about 2 miles round trip.

We enjoyed looking for mushrooms, and enjoying all the beautiful greenery. There was a bunch of stairs at the end, but the view was amazing. Another wonderful waterfall.

The third hike was a bit of drive over to the Hoh Rain Forest to the Hall of Moss Trail. It is about 1.1 miles round trip. We went to the rain forest on our honeymoon so that brought back a lot of memories. The trail was wet, green, and beautiful. The trees can get to be 300 feet tall. Some of the trunks were about 6 feet across.

After our hike, we went to the Hard Rain Cafe. Last time I called it the “perpetually closed store” but they were open this time! We did a little shopping and ate some yummy food from the grill. It's a fun little shop.

Our last hike wasn’t much of a hike either, but a climb over a bunch of driftwood at Rialto Beach outside of Forks. Wow, the waves were crashing really hard. It was just roaring! It was so beautiful. We thought about staying till sunset but that was more than an hour out. But we walked around a bit and took some pictures.

Finally we drove back to the condo. There was lots of driving, but it was totally worth it.

Saturday, March 16th - Travel Day

We got up, had breakfast out on the patio, got packed up and headed out.

We had a few hours to kill after dropping off the rental car, so we explored the airport and hung out in the Sky Lounge.

We had some great views outside the airplane.

Over all we had loads of fun and relaxed a lot. Definitely something that we should do again.
